In this interview, Austrian film director Markus Schleinzer talks about his film Angelo, released in 2018. The film centers on Angelo Soliman, a prominent figure in 18th century Austria. Soliman was taken from his home in Nigeria and served royalty in Austria, achieving a high status unparalleled by African slaves not only in Europe but in most of the world. His story, full of tremendous highs and lows, encapsulates the unfortunate reality of the black minority in Austria. Schleinzer speaks about his inspiration to make the film, the process of the film itself, and reflects on the reality of Black Austrians today. These topics, among many other fascinating talking points, made for a fantastic chat with Herr Schleinzer. Please enjoy!
